Tis the Season for giving! Tis the Season for renewing one's faith and tis the Season for Christmas Magic! As a sea glass jewelry artist I invite my customers to visit my "Sassy Sea Glass Studio" to purchase direct. I have met some wonderful folks and couples this year as we shared sea glass stories over a cup of hot coffee while they ponder through my sea glass jewelry designs. Sometimes it is a quick visit keeping in mind that this is also the season to be in a rush. Then there are those who linger to savor the conversation and the sea glass experience. Despite the hectic chaos as a retailer, I make time to enjoy my customers. My days are long and many a mug of java is consumed, yet is all worth it. The magic of these encounters is always reflected right back and fills my heart with joy. This is my gift to me!

Most notably a gentleman who takes pleasure in surprising his fiance conspired with me to create a Magical Christmas Memory for the two of them. They had viewed my work at the "North American Sea Glass Festival" last October. To my delight two months later I was to partake in his well thought out plan to surprise her. Their drive was quite lengthy and I could see her puzzled expression as she approached the entry. Then a hint of recognition as I greeted them but it was when she glanced over at the display of sea glass jewelry set up just for her that her eyes lit up and she realized why she was there. He had once again managed to fire the flame. The love that these two shared filled the Studio as we engaged in great conversation over a hot cup of coffee and yes sea glass jewelry! She selected two beautiful pieces including the one pictured here. They then set out for part two of his Christmas surprise to the "Seaglass Restaurant" in Salisbury Beach, MA. Thoughtfully they phoned at the end of dinner in gratitude for the experience and the dinning recommendation to this beautiful restaurant set on the breakers in Salisbury. Yes, I love Christmas and my work but to me it is all about people, life, love and of course sea glass.

Always putting one foot in front of the other while moving forward is a constant, it is not all too often that I ponder the foot prints left behind. Today I did! The "North East Sea Glass Society" group brunch was held at the Seaglass Restaurant in Salisbury beach, MA. We say "it is all about the glass" but today's' event proved that this group is about much, much more. It is about friendship, kindness, art, love of the beach and of sea glass. Several familiar faces and many new ones were greeted and received with a warm smile and friendly embrace. The mood was upbeat and cheerful as it always is with this group. The chatter was about sea glass finds, travel, art, sea glass jewelry and reminiscing about past events. Each member brings something special to the group and several are artists of different types. Today it was Linda Dunn that blew me away with her stunning beaded artwork. Others passed around sea glass in the hopes of learning its' source and this old sea glass artisan was honored to be asked to pass around a sea glass bracelet that was handmade several years ago.

The brunch was delectable as we feasted on haddock, shrimp, meats, veggies, greens, omelets, desserts and more. All too quickly our meal came to an end. It was time for the group photo then once again many took to the beach as the chatter and laughter lingered on in spite of the November New England winds that whipped over the dunes of Salisbury beach. Yes, sea glass has been found but even more so friendships.

Sea Glass Festival is a Huge Success!

In my mind's eye I can still see my sea glass friends scurrying around their booths and putting the finishing touches on before the doors opened to thousands of sea glass lovers who poured into the Cape Cod Resort and Conference center October 9th.

The booths that surrounded my booth were all unique as was their sea glass art. Mostly jewelry but each with their own spin on design which gave the appearance of a sea glass candy store.

When 10am arrived the sounds of applause and cheers echoed through out the hall as the crowd made their way to the admissions area. Fun! Fun! Fun! The talented volunteer staff only added to the excitement as happy sea glass lovers bopped from table to table sharing stories, getting information from Richard Lamotte as he signed their copies of "Pure Sea Glass" and then proceeded to shop, sit in on the lectures, view the collector's displays and enter their shards into the "SOTY" contest. (shard of the year).

So nice to have the Festival in my home State of Massachusetts. Many friends came and got caught up in the sea glass frenzy. Home now and working diligently in my quiet studio as I patiently await the announcement of where the 2011 North American Sea Glass Festival will be held. Wouldn't miss it!

Every once in a while an artist comes along that makes one stand up, take notice and deserves to be celebrated. This is true about Judy Trujillo. A Massachusetts sea glass artist and retired art teacher who spends her days combing the beaches of the North Shore in Massachusetts in search of beach finds to incorporate into her magnificent works of art including the sea glass stained glass window featured here. Her sea glass and pottery shard murals are a breathtaking explosion of creativity. I consider myself fortunate to be a friend of Judy's as she is an inspiration and joy to share a day at the beach with. It is like witnessing art in motion as she whips up action figures creating a scene from sea weed and shells just one of her many talents. Judy is an inspiration as one can tell it is her "love of art" that drives her inexhaustible creative energy. A sheer delight for this artist to behold.

This summer has flown and I cannot believe that only seven weeks from today I will be packing my bags and my sea glass jewelry and traveling to Hyannis, MA to participate in the largest annual authentic sea glass event in the world! This is number three for me in attendance and I will have a booth along with over 50 other artists from around the world. There will be displays and lectures and of course lots of shopping. Susan has this beautiful necklace made of green glass beads. The color is not just any green but a unique, undefined shade of green with a frosty surface. Because of its' texture it reminded her of sea glass she use to find on the beach. She wanted earrings made with beach combed natural sea glass to complete her ensemble.
I was grateful that she sent me her necklace to try to make the match. I must admit it was a challenge to find a pair close in color. Sorting through draws and containers of multiple shades of authentic green sea glass from my collection I finally found this pair. Voila!

When working with a customer to create custom sea glass jewelry, I try to make it fun for both of us and give the customer options to allow them to participate in the creation process. My customers not only email but they call and I make the time to speak with them. It may take a little longer, but it makes my job even more enjoyable and the customer very appreciative.

When I designed this piece of sea glass jewelry my focus was to create a sea glass cuff style bracelet that would be simple and clean and show case the sea glass itself. I used silver smith techniques to shape and form the cuff and then torch soldering to create this dimensional bezel setting.

While diligently working on a new design project at a local Art Institute, I felt a watchful observation upon me by another artisan who is my senior.

I looked up and caught her gaze which prompted her to comment...."Did you know the Chinese always make sure there is a small imperfection in their work in humble recognition that only God is perfect"? I smiled and thought how wonderful of her to share that with me. I always listen to those who know more than me and will take this lesson to heart.

I will also always strive to be the best I can be in my sea glass jewelry art, but this lesson is worth pondering and certainly worth passing on.

“Do what you like and STICK With It!”~ Sea Glass & Then Some!

It was wonderful getting lost in thought while touring the notable "Ringling Museum of Art" in Sarasota, FL. From the beloved "Circus Museum" to the Ca d' Zan the home of John and Mable Ringling, I would say it was a memorable day.

Taking home from the day was....

#1) Mankind has always needed a respite from the monotony and drudgery of the day to day and finds escape through bright and positive forms of entertainment like the Circus and the Arts.

#2) Howard Tibbal's quote "Do what you like & stick with it"!

Now this really popped out especially after viewing his 3/4" replica of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Tibbal's feat to complete the replica was monumental and certainly inspirational to this sea glass artist. Whether your dreams are colossal or humble, allow Mr. Tibbal's quote to resonate through out your entire being. As a sea glass artist, I have!

We should all strive to improve by learning new skills and incorporating them into our what ever it is we do. Say NO to complacency! Remember to "rest is to rust" a famous quote by Tom Mullen... (my husband) :). Here is my tip... surround yourself with the best and it will rub off on you.

Half Baked by the Sun & It's Okay! ~ Sea Glass the Journey

I don't know about you, but it took me a long time to come to the hard realization that the person I want to be is always and will always be a work in progress. A continuum to strive to be the best inside and out and then always the proverbial two steps backwards. Never to be discouraged though because I share this realization with every other human being on this planet. This is our life long journey.

Like this piece of sea glass that has been darkened on one end due to prolonged sun exposure while the other end was apparently embedded either under the sand or a rock. The mysteriously stunning dark line of demarcation separates the two colors. It is a beautiful piece of sea glass and so too are we beautiful, even if we are half baked.

Sea Glass on the Beach ~Stars in the Sky & Then There is Connor!

I am the second in the birth order of ten and Aimee' is the baby. My youngest sister and my God-child and very special to me. She is married and relocated to the mid west from New England about ten years ago. We are still a close family and when one is in pain or suffering, we all feel it.

Aimee' has two children. Lily is now 12 and Connor is 10. Beautiful children but life has not been easy at home. Connor was diagnosed with autism at a very young age. I don't really know the specifics or much about autism but what I do know is that it can turn a family upside down and inside out in search of hope.

In order to obtain proper treatment and a quality education without discrimination has been a constant battle in and out of the courts. As a matter of fact hearing about some of the events that transpired in the early days of his education forces me to believe the system was quite backward.

And you say...what does this have to do with sea glass? My life long attraction to sea glass is not just about a beautifully frosted shard, the history behind the glass or even the stroll on the beach pondering the mysteries of the universe. It is all this and more. It is understanding the value in adversity. Why? Why do some have greater challenges than others? Why all the suffering, Why are there difficult people? Why does Connor have autism? I don't know! I don't understand but this is what I have come to believe....

Through adversity one changes on the inside. A metamorphosis of the soul so to speak. I believe this change with faith can become a positive and good things can come from it. I think about sea glass and its' tossing and tumbling for all those years. It is broken and tumbled and broken and tossed until it becomes a beautiful gem and stronger than before. Difficult to chip or break. Now I look at my little sister Aimee' who with her husband has taken the bull by the horns and has faced this challenge with their sons autism. Aimee' has tirelessly fought for Connor's rights for a quality public education and is now fighting for medical insurance coverage for his treatment of autism. I am so proud of my sister and want to share with you this email I received from her the other day.

Aimee' writes...

I just wanted to share with you a celebration of a little boy that has touched my life so much that I have to share this with all of you.

As you know Connor is on the Spectrum of Autism and has come a long way from being non verbal to highly verbal and all his challenges in the school system and now successful in his studies at school. This includes being nominated "Student of the Month" with his picture proudly displayed behind the glass in the hallways. But yesterday he just blew me away!

Connor was awarded a scholarship with an agency that works with children with disabilities and sports. He got to ski at a local ski resort (much like Bradford for those of you who know). As I shadowed him with his instructor "Herb", I watched them converse all the while he was watching the instructor intently as to what to do next. Step by step learning how to ski. I was amazed as he grabbed the tow rope and went through all of the obstacles successfully and coming to a stop at the bottom of the hill.

It was such a thrill to see Connor "stand out" in a way that surprised me. He wasn't like the other kids. He was better! I shed tears of joy and not tears of a mom whose heart is sometimes secretly sad about the way he stands out as a child on the spectrum. At the end of the day, Connor put his hands in the air and shouted "this is my best life ever"! What more can a mom ask for?

I would like to mention my sister Aimee' now spends time speaking to other families, educators and organizations on various issues of children with disabilities while educating, encouraging and empowering other parents. Looking back and then looking around, it is amazing how the sea glass world has changed since the commencement of my business several years ago. Artists! Artists everywhere! I launched a sea glass hunters group (The North East Sea Glass Society) in New England last Spring which has been a Mecca for the local sea glass enthusiasts and many prominent local sea glass artists.
A social network for "Sea glass artists & collectors" has the sea glass artist world rocking!
The NASGA (North American Sea Glass Association) annual "Sea Glass Festival" has grown by leaps and bounds in both its' attendance and vendor participants and is the "Ultimate Sea Glass Event" of the year.

There were just a few sea glass artists on the net when "Sea Glass Jewelry by Danielle Renee's" online gallery was launched. Now there are too many to count. Once asked... how do I feel about the competition? If anything, I welcome it! First of all given its' recent surge in popularity, it would be like trying to hold back the tide to not embrace it. Secondly, people have a right to pursue their dreams, just as I have.

We are now witnessing many different types of sea glass art including photography, painting, sculpturing, furniture making and jewelry making. There is much talent to behold and it is blatantly obvious that the true artist works diligently at being unique in every sense of the word. These artists are set apart from the others and will ultimately achieve success.

I once read an article about a Wharf in New Jersey. Both sides of the wharf were lined with Pizza stands. Each Pizza business here on this wharf did well. Why? Because they all had their own recipes! Having so many types of pizza to choose from, made it a huge draw to the public. Different people, different tastes. One location made it easy for the public and makes it a win, win for everyone. I equate this success story to the annual "North American Sea Glass Festival".

When it comes to finding a perfect match for sea glass earrings it is no easy task. I can relate this to the same lesson a good mother passes on to her daughters and sons. Hold out for the right one. Good things really do come to those who wait and sometimes it is a quick and easy find, but it truly is all up to destiny.

The uniqueness in each piece of sea glass presents a challenge in pairing for sea glass earrings. This pair has been in the making for years as my sea glass collection has grown. After sifting through thousands of pieces of sea glass then spreading much of it about I carefully compare color, shape, thickness and size until a suitable mate has been selected.

This grace period between the much celebrated holidays of Christmas and New Years affords time to gaze into ones' own reflecting pool of the prior 12 months. Examine, condense, anaylze and evaluate ones' own physical, spiritual, personal & professional growth. Its' strengths and weaknesses, achievements and failures are all to be pondered in a sincere attempt to fully embrace the soon to be New Year.

Changing tides in the ever evolving life of each human being is a constant. Traditionally during this week each year we ask ourselves "how can we keep our bodies, minds and spirits healthier in the coming year"? What have we learned by the events of the year that is about to conclude that will assist us in charting out our new commitments for personal and professional growth? Most importantly how can each of us in our own humble way, make this a better world?

Much like the evolution of sea glass from trash glass enduring the tossing and tumbling of a mighty ocean in order to be transformed in to a sea glass gem, so too the human spirit makes this personal journey of transformation and in time can be smoothed and beautified by the tossing and tumbling of life.

The pages of the calendar keep flipping as we are rapidly approaching a new year. Is it possible 2010 is right around the corner? The signs are all there as folks are hustling and bustling during this the busiest time of year. I know I should be doing a hundred other things but inspiration has been tugging at my heart.

After spending some time in the studio this past week, I have decided to create a line of sea glass designs that expresses my love of sea glass and art.

And so....here is a preview my new line of sea glass jewelry that will be available in 2010. Its' title "I love Sea Glass" tells it all.

Stop & Smell The Salt Air~Seaglassin

We are home! Yes, from all counts the Sea Glass Festival was a tremendous success. The crowds were huge! The venue was right on and the camaraderie amongst the artisans was refreshing and inspiring.

The fast pace didn't afford the opportunity to venture past ones' own booth during Festival hours, but feedback from the crowd underscored the uniqueness and diversity of the many artists interpretations of sea glass art. This added an element of intrigue and excitement to the already electrifying atmosphere.

Sea glass folks from all over were in high spirits and anxious to meet the vendors that they have come to know through the many connections via the Internet. The web certainly has helped fuel this passion that so many seem to have in common. From my vantage point the sentiments were mutual and very uplifting to shake hands and converse with many sea glass friends and business associates who I could now put a face with a name.

The pace was fast and this artist is just now catching her breath and getting back to her love (besides my family of course)... the beach and the studio.

The Road to the North American Sea Glass Festival

I have been a member of the North American Sea Glass Association almost since its' conception.
October 17th & 18th are the dates for this years "North American Sea Glass Festival". It will be held at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, PA.

Forty two artists will be vendors at this the largest sea glass event of the year. Sea Glass enthusiasts will be traveling from well beyond the boundries of the USA. All with the same motive.... the love of pure sea glass.

I attended the Festival last year in Lewes DE and was caught up in a wirlwind of total sea glass. For a true sea glass & beach lover this is the place to be once a year.

This year "Sea Glass Jewelry by Danielle Renee" looks forward to having a booth at this event and welcomes all who are there to stop by and please say hello. I also look forward to hearing about your own sea glass adventures and share in the joy of this passion.

I will be displaying many of my sea glass designs both new and old including pieces that are rated to be extremely rare and old.

Since the onset of my sea glass adventure, my collection has expanded immensely. I am pleased to say I have sea glass from around the globe. I also see that there is a market for sea glass jewelry that is also becoming global.

This beautiful piece of authentic sea glass was found in the Grecian Islands. The color is somewhat of a darker shade of seafoam. Large, very worn and the properties appear a little different from what I typically see. I believe it to be very old. Found by a novice collector and then into my hands to create this custom piece. I am always honored when someone entrusts their special finds to me. I wrapped it to show off the glass and topped it with a beautiful bail as it deserves still keeping the sea glass as the "Star". That is how it should be .

Pottery sea glass shards are wonderful and evocative. Thinking back to Mimi's beach house I remember the dishes and kitchenware were partly Fiesta Ware, partly Jade Milk glass and the rest was eclectic pieces from old china and pottery sets. It was things of this nature that gave one a sense of total relaxation and peace, however it had a beauty of its' own.

Feelings of warmth and sentimetality envelope me as I work on these sea glass items. They evoke fond memories of summer days spent at Mimi's Cottage by the sea.

According to the sea glass bible "Pure Sea Glass" by Richard Lamotte, cornflower blue sea glass is extremely rare.

Due to it's rarity and beauty it is much desired by both sea glass collectors and contemporary jewelry lovers.

The thickness of this piece indicates it is very old. Nicely smoothed by the Pacific Ocean probably for decades, maybe even a century.

Copious amounts of 14k GF wire was used to create the focal which measures approximated 1 1/2" in length.

Findings are all 14K GF.

The popularity of sea glass has evolved and is reaching a climax. The numbers of proclaimed sea glass collectors has escalated to the point where seaglass hunters are combing the beach in the snow.

With litter laws in place coupled with the replacement of glass with plastic and cans I am afraid sea glass is becoming extinct.

I am hearing all the time from hunters that the pickings are slim. Hold on to what you have. I believe the value of sea glass will only increase especially in pieces like the one used in this piece. Black sea glass marble found in the UK.

January 31st, 2009 the Travel Channel aired a clip on sea glass hunting. One of the hunters featured was Charles Peden who kayaked across the San Francisco Bay, scaled down a treacherous cliff and proceeded to endure rip tides and crashing waves all for the thrill of finding a precious sea glass gem. He was great and displayed a side of sea glass hunting that I never witnessed before.

No cliffs or rip tide for this sea glass lady. You will find me strolling the beaches of New England with deep pockets, eyes always to the ground.

Jadite seaglass tells a story. When I was young I remember at my grandmothers beach house she had mixing bowls, silverware a juice squeezer and other kitchen items made out of this light green opaque colored glass. Who would have thought that many items like these would end up in a dump somewhere and then eventually in the ocean. This glass was also referred to as "clambroth" and produced from the 1930's to 1972.

January is a busy month closing out the old year and making plans for the new. Stocking up on supplies that will last through out the year and now time to start building up an inventory.

I have met new sea glass collectors over the last year which is great for me because I rely heavily on my collector's and Divine Providence to keep me well supplied. I am very picky about what sea glass I use in my designs and am now working with three different hunters who live in different parts of North America which keeps it pretty interesting. Different sea glass from different parts of the world. I am sure culture and age has much to do with it.

Yes! Today I am in the zone. I am focused and ready for "2009".

As I sift through my sea glass collection to get organized for my next projects, I can't help but think I could hold these pieces of sea glass blind folded and just by handling them know what to create with them.

This year I am kicking it up a notch with my designs. My bangle bracelets will be better than ever. My goal is create artisan designs that wear as well as jewelers'. It can't just be artistic, it has to be of the finest quality as well.

I now have salt from my sea glass all over my keyboard! :)

This sea glass marble, what was known as a Popper had been smoothed and frosted by the cold Atlantic where is was tossed upon the beach of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Aqua is one of the most desired colors of sea glass. It is not only beautiful but it is also reminiscent of the colors of a Tropical Sea. I do find that most of my customers are attracted to this color because of this reason. However now that sea glass is becoming more and more popular, the consumer is becoming more knowledgeable about these gems and are requesting the rarest pieces that one can find. I do think they have a better understanding of the value and where this industry is headed.

I must admit, sea glass marbles are my favorite out of my entire sea glass collection. They are playful, colorful and have a story behind them. Of course many of them were once toys most likely lost on the beach in the 1960's. However some are extremely rare and may date back centuries.

This piece is a Sea Glass Pee Wee Marble. Titled "Pee Wee" because of it's size. These marbles were produced in a limited quantity making them even more desirable to the sea glass collector.

Most of my sea glass marbles are from Nova Scotia.
This piece makes for a delightful and delicate sea glass necklace in gold.

Black sea glass sometimes comes from Citron colored glass that has darkend in the ocean over a long period of time. Very black sea glass whose origin is from true black glass is extremely rare. My research tells me it may be some of the oldest sea glass around. This piece was beach found by a friend and fellow collector in California. Because of the rarity of this piece it deserved to be hand crafted in gold.
I am pleased with the outcome.

I took this photo of Blackwater River on December 23rd, 2008 after our third storm of the season. Low tide reveals some of the elevated sandbars in the river. The river is flowing north towards the Seabrook basin. The Basin is where my grandmother "Mimi" had beach property and where my love of the ocean and sea glass collecting commenced as a child.

A tidal inlet, Blackwater River flows from the Salt Marsh of Salisbury, MA entering into the Marsh and Basin of Seabrook NH where it eventually enters the Atlantic Ocean via the Hampton River.

As a child my siblings and I enjoyed natures own water park where the Blackwater River merges into the Seabrook Basin. At low tide we would walk through the flats and float allowing the river to take us for a wonderful ride. Of course this had to be at low tide because at high tide the current is considered too strong to use as a playground.

Walking the shore line from the Seabrook Basin, under the bridge to the Ocean front of Seabrook Beach afforded us the perfect venue for collecting sea glass, star fish, shells, rocks and all kinds of ocean offerings. Our collections we would return to "Mimi's" beach house where we would sprawl our finds for the day out on the picnic table to be dried and cleaned before finding the perfect placement for these treasures.

Here is where my sea glass journey began. Decades later I am making a living with Mimi's and my sea glass collections. Taking these sea glass gems along with sea glass from other shorelines from around the world and making beautiful sea glass jewelry with them.

I strive to honor both Mimi and sea glass in my designs.
